My dog is terribly scared of thunder storms?

Is there anything we can do to help her, so she’s not as afraid? When she starts to hear thunder, she’ll hide in her usual places and start shaking and panting. Any help?

If I know there is a bag storm coming I take my dog for a extra long walk just to wear him out! Then we play and give treats during the worst of the storm. Dont give the treats/rewards when the dog is shaking and scared, but when he’s playing and having a good time.
My dog is a huge ham for company. My neighbor comes over when the lights go out sometimes and it’s a great distraction for my dog. He wants her undivided attention and soon forgets about the storm outside. So I guess my advice would be just to distract your dog how ever you can.

go to wal-mart or walgreens or something of that nature and buy this:
Valerian Root-and all natural herbal sleep aid.
My vet recomended it for my dog and it works wonders. My vet takes it for insomnia. Anyway, give your dog 1 -2 pills depending on weight 30 minutes before the strom. So like if you see a big black cloud give it to him/her. It won’t put them to sleep since they are so worked up but it does calm their nerves enough to be comfortable.
Hope this helps!

beat your dog every time it acts scared. It’ll soon learn it’s place, and only be scared of you.

They like to be in a dark place. I play music to drown out the noise of the storm. I use melatonin, which is also sold in the walmart pharmacy. 1 milligram per 10 pounds of dog.

It could also be the air pressure that is upseting her. When there is a storm coming the air pressure changes, and that could be affecting her. There are calming medications that you can get at a pet store, and you can also try using dryer sheets! Sometimes it isn’t the thunder that gets them fearful, it is the static in the air, and rubbing their fur with dryer sheets takes care of the static. It works sometimes on my dogs. There are also music tapes/Cd’s that can sooth your dog. Or you can just let her hide and wait it out. I have tried them all on my little Tzu, sometimes one will work, sometimes another will work.. I can tell you this, from the advice of a professional trainer, do not give her more attention when she is shaking and panting. That just confirms to her that it is acceptable behavior, and she will keep doing it to get your attention.

Three of my four dogs do the same thing during storms and fireworks. Go to your local pet store and buy Anxiety TFLN (something like that…I can never remember the funny letters on the end). It is in a pink box, made specifically for storms and fireworks, and is all natural.
The dose is by weight – just place the drops on a treat or piece of bread. It will work in about 15 minutes. What I like about this is 1. my vet recommends it and 2. it will not dope your dog out…just calm them. I think I pay $10 or less for a bottle and a bottle goes a long way. If I know a big storm is coming I will give it to my dogs before it hits to lessen the stress on them.
Good luck!

Find her most favorite stinky treat and every time the thunder hits stick a treat in her face to get her attention off the storm and on to the yummy in your hand. Do this through out the storm to distract her. Eventually she won’t even pay attetion to the storm.
