If you really have your heart set on a monitor then get an Ackie. They stay small and are able to be housed more easily than a savannah or other large monitors. The best thing is that you can get them captive bred. Most savannahs and other monitors are wild caught. Check out some info here-
http://proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#14. Please read the entire site. You may also want to check out
http://savannahmonitor.org/ for why Savannah monitors are not for everyone.
Some monitors are dangerous and are not suitable for private homes, while others like green tree monitors stress and die too easily and are best left to experts.
There is no such thing as" tamest." Monitors are very intelligent lizards with individual temperments, some will learn that you are not a threat over time, and some won’t.

? You do understand that monitors are meat-eating lizards? If you really want a "tame" lizard, go with a beardie or a blue tongue skink. Monitors take large enclosures and high temp basking lights, and are never really tame. Trying to pick the tamest monitor is like trying to shoot the softest bullet. Monitors are large lizards, and if you were dead-set on getting one, a savannah, black-throat, or mangrove monitor. Look into tegus, they are like monitors, only smaller and less kill you.

It depends i would go with a ackie harder to find little spendy but worth it only get around 2ft a think. DON’T get a black throat moniter friendly yes but if you dont now what your doing they are very deadly take your finger clean off with one bit

in my experience savannahs and black throats are about the tamest, but that is a very relative term, i have a savannah that i use in my educational shows that is what i would consider dog tame, but i have also handled savannahs that would be more than happy to try to take your face off. All in all though, i wouldn’t suggest any monitor lizard until after atleast a few years of reptile keeping.

Savannah monitor hands down. They are also one of the smallest species and the easiest to care for. Although these guys are considered a smaller monitor, they still need 8×4 feet of space as an adult. So don’t get one unless you have the room! They also need rodents and bugs such as crickets and roaches as a part of their diet. Just do lots of research. A Savannah really is the only monitor I would recommend as a beginner monitor. Good luck.
